April 24th, 2008
What’s as addictive as crack, as fun as cheating on your diet, and ends up producing yarn???  Spinning of course.  If you were here last Saturday and heard occasional gales of laughter floating up the staircase and wondered to yourself “what is going on down there?”.  What was going on was a sold out Spinning class. Eight people bonding over raw fiber, dropped spindles and the eventual creation of yarn.

Sheep, Wine & Yarn, what could be bad!

April 18th, 2008

If you weren’t at The Point on Tuesday, you missed a swell party. The amazing Joan Tapper & the fabulous Gale Zucker were here to share stories, show samples, sign their book and generally inspire us. The book . . . Shear Spirit: Ten Fiber Farms, Twenty Patterns, and Miles of Yarn.

Every staff member that that night (including yours truly) snatched up a copy for ourselves!

Point Pointers - The felted join

March 28th, 2008

Welcome to new feature #2 (see yarn lust for new feature #1). The amazing staff and I will be posting our favorite tips. If you have a favorite knitting or crochet tip, post a comment . . . share the yarny love!

Today’s Point Pointer, my all time favorite way to join a new ball of yarn. . . the felted join.

This method only works with animal fiber. It will even work on blends as long as the majority of the blend is an animal fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, cashmere, mohair, angora etc.). The only exception to this is superwash wool. Basically, if you can machine wash it, it won’t felt.

Joining a second ball of same color:

With this method you don’t have to join at the end of the row, but it is still the cleanest place to join.

1) take your existing yarn and the new yarn and fray each end

- if it is a multi ply yarn (yarn twisted with 2 - 4 individual threads), separate the plys and cut 1/2 of
them away, about an inch worth

- if it is a single ply (like Cascade Magnum or Twinkle), pull it apart an cut away 1/2 the thickness, about an inch worth.

2) Overlap the two frayed ends, one from your current yarn, and one from the new ball

3) put the two overlapped ends in the palm of your hand

HERE COMES THE MAGIC!

4) spit (you heard me) in your other palm

5) rub both palms together until you start to feel heat. You are felting!

6) check the join, give a little tug and see if it’s snug

Joining a second ball of a different color:

Want to use the same method and have the color change happen PERFECTLY at the start of a new row?

1) knit to the end of the row

2) cut the 1st color yarn pretty close to the needle (hang on to the end so it doesn’t get away)

3) unknit a few inches back (to give yourself room)

4) fray both ends and do your felted join

5) knit to the end of the row and watch your new color change in EXACTLY the right spot!

Boot Camp JOIN THE SOCK CRAZE!

Sunday March 16th

Socks are definitely the hottest trend in knitting, and, with the cool new yarns from SWTC, we can make them from renewable resources like soy and even recycled shrimp and crab shells!

To encourage local yarn enthusiasts to “enlist” in the sock knitting craze, The Point is hosting a Boot Camp for Socks event on Sunday March 16th. This event will offer “basic training” in sock knitting and feature SWTC’s Earth-friendly sock yarn, TOFUtsies. The Boot Camp Trunk show will remain on display until March 24th!

A runaway hit in the yarn industry this year, Earth-friendly TOFUtsies is a blend of superwash wool, SWTC’s trademarked SOYSILK® brand fiber, cotton and “chitin,” a fiber made from recycled shrimp and crab shells. The name TOFUtsies derives from SOYSILK’s production from the by-products of tofu manufacturing. The yarn can be machine washed and dried and comes in creative color combinations.

In addition, TOFUtsies is sold in balls just the right size for making a pair of socks. So, there’s no chance a knitter will run out and have to buy additional yarn from a different dye lot.

“Hand-knitting socks in funky patterns and colors is addictive!” says SWTC President Jonelle Raffino. “And, attending a SWTC Boot Camp event is the perfect way to get started on a fun project and learn about modern options for Earth-friendly knitting.”

It’s sweater time!

Twinkle

Looking at the EIGHTEEN new colors of Twinkle hanging on the wall (that’s right, I said eighteen), put me in the mind of sweater knitting. Looking at the Rowan Calmer, the amazing new Classic Elite Soft Linen, the Be Sweet Bamboo, all I can see are sweaters waiting to happen. . .sweaters, cute little short sleeve tops for summer, tank tops, hoodies, it makes my mind swim.

Yet some of you have never knit a sweater. . . never knit a t-shirt, short sleeve top or tank. You’ve knit hats, scarves, gloves, cowls, shawls, ponchos, wraps, anything but the scary scary sweater. Trust me, it’s not scary (as many of you who know me, it’s all I ever knit).

Well now there’s help. Back by popular demand Barbara Kerr’s Design Your Own Sweater workshop. The first session sold out in three days, so don’t miss out. If you sign up soon you’ll have time to order exactly the yarn in the exact color you want to make your own custom designed perfect top.

Take a breath, take the leap, make the top of your dreams.

Boy oh Boy, a gal leaves town for a week (on vacation), and comes back to a whole new store!

When I left it was winter. When I came back it was Spring.

Kim, our own Asst. Manager, and all the other folks at The Point were busy unpacking all the spring yarns. Kim getting a little overly enthusiastic about the whole “Out of The Box” concept, decided to BECOME her own “Out of the Box”

So much yarn, so little time

January 26th, 2008

It’s been too long since our last post, but SOOO much has been happening. Rebecca is working on her next design of the month, and I’ve taken over the blog. Speaking of our own Rebecca . . .spending so much time amongst the yarn company folks and all those folks who have made yarn their biz (more about that later), I sometimes feel like a dilettante. Like everyone is better at knitting than I am. I was recently amazed, impressed, inspired, and many other adjectives to find out Rebecca, The Point’s own designer, the woman who has brought us some of our favorite patterns (Sophia tank, Super Slouchy Beret, 2 in 1 Hat, to name but a few) had never knit a sweater before working at the Point. How’s that for inspirational? You all can do it too.

In other yarny news . . . There will be lots of new goodies coming in this season. I spent a crazy 48 hours in Long Beach last week at the National NeedleArts Association Trade show. Two thousand one hundred and fifty vendors in 48 hours. I walked my feet off for you all to bring back the best in the world. In the coming weeks and months we will be announcing, one by one (got to keep the suspense!) the new vendors we will be carrying. Helane and I have been ordering as fast as we can.

Many of you have already enjoyed our new e-mail feature “Out of the Box”. This will keep you all up to date on the deliveries, so you know when you need to call in sick to work and get on over to the Point.

If you haven’t already signed up for our e-mail list, it’s not to late. Get on over to our web page and join the fun!

Milestones

December 21st, 2007

gloves.jpgAs knitters, we mark anniversaries differently. Meaning, we have a different set of milestones that we recognize, unique to those who love fiber.

Personally, I can remember the completion of my first sweater as vividly as my 16th birthday. Even more so, because it was a goal that I set for myself that I met and celebrated with an overwhelming sense of personal accomplishment. Not simply a birthday that would have come whether I wanted it to or not, but an obstacle that I chose and that I conquered.

My first sweater, my first pair of socks, my first mittens (one of my fondest), they wouldn’t have been possible without the knowledge and support of knitter friends more experienced than I. I was fortunate to have around me, a caring support group of people who would answer questions and give guidance. Fortunately for you, The Point has anticipated your knitterly needs and put one in place for you.

This winter we are offering a series of classes dedicated to helping you take that next step and making something that, maybe, you didn’t think possible. Take a look:

The Point Holiday Gift Guide - Part 2

December 6th, 2007

The staff at The Point is still full of amazing gift-y ideas for your fiber-loving friends. Check it out:

Megan: I have to say- the cheaper I get, the more trouble is bound to ensue. I’m sick of carrying around my knitting projects in little plastic bags. Needles poke through, creating holes for stitch markers and darning needles to escape; I mix up my plastic-bagged knitting with my slightly ajar tupperwared lunch and end up with balsamic vinegar residue on my yarn; the handles on a plastic bag aren’t created for over-the-shoulder comfort, especially annoying because of how many other bags i seem to be toting around. It’s time to face facts: I need a Go Knit Pouch, impossible to incise with needles, obvious enough to not mix up lunch with fibrous project, with a drawstring that can either find happiness thrown over the shoulder or can be carried around, fanny-pack style! For the holidays this year, I suggest the ultimate gift to be the Go Knit Pouch, preferably size Large, to accommodate you either way. Let us breathe through simplification!

Helane: My idea is Gold Club ($100) or Silver Club ($75) membership. It is the gift that keeps on giving for our customer. The perfect gift for someone to give them!

Leia: I don’t know how anyone lives without “The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes & Gauges” and to get started I’d pick Alpaca With a Twist: Baby Twist! :D

Ana: An Amy Butler knitting bag, “The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes & Gauges” and “Son of Stitch N’ Bitch” :) .

Kiana: If it were me, I’d have to say a Gift Certificate from The Point NYC. Then I could choose anything I want!!

The Point Holiday Gift Guide

December 1st, 2007

the-point-holiday.jpg

This holiday season, The Point would like to offer you a guide to buying gifts for your favorite fiber enthusiasts.  Be careful, you just might discover a few items that you can’t resist getting for yourself!

Here is the first installment:

Patty: Two words… Manos Silk!

(For those not in the know, Manos del Uruguay has just produced a new line of yarn that is 30% silk and 70% wool in beautiful Manos Hand-dyed colors!  It’s not even on their website yet!)

Beverly: Hmmm.  I think I would pick “Stitch N’ Bitch Handbook”/”The Happy Hooker” for a beginner knitter/crocheter. And Malabrigo for the more advanced knitter.  It’s Malabrigo, who doesn’t love Malabrigo?!

Rebecca (myself):  A good book is always in order for inspiration.  I love Twinkle’s new book, “Big City Knits” and the new “Son of Stitch N’ Bitch”.  Also, nothing says love like some luxury yarn - I would go crazy for Claudia’s Hand Painted Silk Lace!

Charitable Knitting

November 16th, 2007

afghansforafghans.jpgl

In 2002, I was working as a wardrobe assistant. It was a very glamourous job for someone just 25 years old. I found myself having to travel by airplane at least once a month and though the job was demanding at times, I often found myself waiting around a lot. I was bored.

So, I decided to learn how to knit. It seemed a very sensible thing to do - It was productive and entertaining, right? Great! Little did I know that 5 years later, not only would I still be knitting, but that it would lead to a job at a knitting store! And writing this blog!
When I spoke to Ann Rubin, founder of Afghans for Afghans on Monday night at The Point, she had a very similar story.

OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but her story goes like this:

In 2001, just after the 9/11, Ann found herself unemplyoed as a result of the dot com bubble bursting. She was living in the San Francisco area, which has the largest Afghani community in the US. Out of work, and desperate to do something for the refugees of the country which she had visited in 1999 and loved so much, Ann started to organize her friends.

The San Fransico office of the American Friends Service Committee was putting together a container of supplies to send to Afghanistan and Ann wanted to contribute something. “We should make afghans for Afghans,” she quipped to a friend. And a legend was born.

“6 years later, I can’t believe we’re still going!” Ann confided in me. (See how like her I am? Again, I’m kidding. Get it?)

That’s the magic of this world we inhabit. Knitting and crocheting can make a difference in people’s lives. (Tell that to your friend the next time she gives you the stink eye for knitting on the subway!)

To contribute donations to Afhgans for Afghans please visit their website. Their needs change often (could be baby hats one week, socks the next) and they have the most up to date information on their site at all times.

Where everyone knows your name…

October 27th, 2007

debbie-the-point-crew.jpg

On Monday, Debbie Stoller vistited The Point to film a segment on knitting groups for Better TV.  Here she is posing with (from left) Patty and the new members of The Point family,  Megan and Cale.

We were thrilled that Debbie chose The Point as the place to film a bit all about group knitting.  (Yours truly even got to sit and knit with Debbie!)  I mean, can you think of a better place?  Not only are we the destination for the knitting group that Debbie herself founded, we are the place that many other friendships founded in fiber love were forged!

At The Point, the staff is a family and when you walk through the doors, we are welcoming you into our home.  Many of our employees are customers who just couldn’t get enough!  You may have seen them knitting at one of our tables and now they’ll be smiling at you from behind the counter.

But it’s the community that has sprung up at The Point that makes it truly a unique store.  The fiber arts seem foster a need for sharing and comminucating more than other hobbies.  The solitary knitter craves the input of others who can understand his or her secret language.  Others, who can get excited (and cheer and give you a standing ovation) when you complete your first sweater!  A new knitter can find that the minute he or she steps foot in The Point.

We often have new customers who ask when are the nights that groups meet at the store to knit.  The honest to goodness answer is every day.  Show up, don’t be shy and pull up a chair.  You most likely will make a new friend and learn something new.  Then, before you know it, you’ll have your very own knitting group and you’ll meet at The Point, where everyone knows your name.

Get your spin on!

October 20th, 2007

kiana-and-her-mom-spinning.jpg

One of the exciting new classes we are offering this fall at The Point is spinning!  As demonstrated here, by our very own Kiana and her mom, you can now learn how to spin you very own yarn.  As if you weren’t already obsessed enough with fiber!

The incredibly talented Alexandra Sarkozy is holding court with the spinning wheel starting, well, right now.  You can call us for a private lesson with the wheel and Alexandra at any time.

Also, there is a drop spindle spinning workshop on the menu.  Sign up for the workshop on Saturday, November 24th from 2:00 - 5:00pm.  The workshop is only $65 and you can sign up right now online!

Dye Your Own Yarn, Or New Workshops at The Point!

October 12th, 2007

dsc05585.jpg

What’s that you say?  I can’t believe it!  You mean you haven’t heard about the cool new workshops being offered at The Point this fall?!  Where have you been hiding?!

Please, allow me to fill you in on all the cool happenings.

dsc05584.jpg

One of the most exciting new workshops we are featuring this fall is the Yarn Dying Workshop!  In one morning, you will be able to select your custom colors of Aljo Batik Acid Dye and create a one-of-a-kind creation of the wooly variety.  Students have a choice of a sport-weight merino wool or a bulky New Zealand wool.  Buy one skein or buy five - it’s up to you!

We’ve already had one very successful workshop as evidenced in the photos above, but, never fear!  The Point is offering 3 more sessions: October 21st, November 4th and November 8th.  Workshops are run by New Kid on the Block, Megan, The Point’s newest import from Los Angeles.  Trust us, she knows a thing or two (or three) about color.

So what are you waiting for?  Sign up now!

img_1560.jpg

Just look at all those people kntting, laughing, eating and having a good ol’ time, The Point-style.  (Oh, yeah.  There’s me in the top right hand corner.)
img_1570.jpg

The party was a first for our new teacher, Megan, and our new manager, Patty.  I do believe they enjoyed themselves as well!

Don’t be sad because you missed out - plan your next part at The Point!  We’ll make sure you get to eat, knit and be happy!!!!

September’s Yarn of the Month

September 4th, 2007

v1.jpg

September’s Yarn of the Month is Nature Wool! Nature Wool from Araucania is a basic 100% wool yarn hand dyed in 11 bright colors with subtle variegations. The yarn is hand dyed by a women’s cooperative in Chile using only vegetable dyes.

September’s Pattern of the Month is the Super Slouchy Beret. It is knit from a one skein of Nature Wool and the pattern is free when you buy the yarn!  This is a great basic beret pattern that will allow you to practice a basic stitch pattern. We wanted to give you a little something to get you started on your Fall wardrobe.  You can knit this is a single weekend (or a night if you’re really obsessed).  Get a jump on Fall and flex your knitting muscles!

The exclusive yarn and pattern of the month is available at The Point for the entire month of September.
If you don’t live in the NYC area, give us a call and we’ll take you order over the phone. View colors online and we’ll place your order!

Bamboo from South West Trading Co.

July 19th, 2007

bamboo1.jpg

Several staff members at The Point are just crazy about Bamboo, from South West Trading Co.  They’re snatching it up to make everything from cardigans to shawls.

As a part of the series of unique, innovative fibers, South West Trading Company offers outstanding, high quality “Bamboo.” Made by processing the bamboo grass stalk and combing the fiber strands from the actual plant itself, this yarn is 100% bamboo with nothing else added! Often compared to premier ramie, it’s cool and silky soft to the touch and works up beautifully in sweaters, tops, dresses, skirts, really anything where a flowing drape is important.

Come and get yours, while it lasts!

nicky-epstein.jpg

Oh, Nicky! How we love you! Could you be any cooler? No. We think not.

Monday, at The Point, Nicky Epstein visited us to talk about her new book, Knitting Never Felt Better. Just when you thought that she couldn’t possibly have any more innovative, creative ideas left in her lovely little head, she gives us this. Another source of constant inspiration.

The Knitting Never Felt Better trunk show is on display now, at The Point. So come by and see for yourself how cool felting can be. Come, see, touch and be inspired!  Oh, and eat, knit and be happy, too!

On Tuesday The Point played host to the lovely Sasha Kagan, author of the amazingly inspirational book, Crochet Inspiration.  Aptly named, we think.

Sasha was as vibrant and approachable as her work.  She came bearing a sample of nearly everything in her book and was equipped with enthusiasm and a good pen (for autographing, of course!).

Sadly, her samples are gone, but a few signed copies of Crochet Inspiration remain, along with the creative spirit of Sasha herself.  Won’t you come and be inspired?

In The Good Ol’ Summertime

May 28th, 2007

linen.jpg
Memorial Day is here and we at The Point have summer on the brain. Lazy hot days, sitting on the family porch with apple blossoms in our hair, drinking lemonade and knitting.

Yes, I said knitting! Nobody stops knitting just because the weather is no longer blustery and cold! Now is the perfect time to get a jump on your holiday gift knitting, or make something lovely and summer for yourself.

Punta Del Este Linen 7 has arrived at The Point, just in time for your summer knitting needs. Linen 7 is 85% linen and 15% baby alpaca and, at about 4.5 stitches per inch, would make a wonderful lightweight cardigan for cool nights. Or, consider a tank top or wrap. Oh, and there are other yarns to choose from as well. All full of summery inspiration

On Your Toes

May 12th, 2007

onyourtoessock.jpg

So, a few staff members at The Point have been lamenting over the difficulties they are having knitting a particualr pair of toe-up socks.  (Yes, in case you were wondering, I am one of them.)

Just when we thought all hope was lost, the new issue of Interweave Knits Magazine arrived at the store!  Horray!  We are saved!

The new issue features an article on how to knit socks from the toe up and a super pattern by Ann Budd.  Interweave demystifies the provisional cast-on and short-row heel with clear drawings and concise explanations.  It also, features an ordinary increased toe, rather than a short row toe.  We were really, really excited to read the article.

And you may not believe it, but the arrival of Interweave Knits Magazine co-ordinated with a new shipment of Trekking XXL sock yarn!  It’s almost too good to be true!

So, listen, if you were yearning to knit socks from the toe up, or even at all, now’s your chance!  Go get a magazine!  Go get some yarn!

It’s not too late. (It wasn’t for us.)

You Saw It Here First.

The Point’s very own Josh Bennet is in the process of making a gorgeous new pattern, for you, our customers!  It’s very nearly ready, so we thought we’d give you a little sneak peak.

This is a shrunken cardigan, made out of very glamorous Gatsby.  You will nead between 7 and 10 balls of yarn (depending on your size) to make this snazzy number, so stock up now - we just got our shipment.  That way, when the pattern is ready, you’ll have all of your yarn!

Keep an eye open here, to find out when the pattern will be available!

Adventures in Blogland!

April 26th, 2007

Hello out there.  We thought we’d do something different this week and have you read some other blogs.  We know, we know, you want to read our blog!  But we want to share with you some sites that we really love.

 See Eunny Knit!
Eunny Jang is the new editor of Interweave Knits Magazine and an incredibly talented knitter.  Her blog is not only beautiful, but useful!  Eunny has her own gorgeous, orignal patterns available for download - some are free and some are for sale.  She also has tutorials on fair asile, lace knitting, steeks, and dying.  Go!  Read, be inspired and learn something!

 Knit.1 Magazine
The very cool and lovely Michelle Wiener is the voice of the Knit.1 Blog.  She not only keeps you up to date on the ins and outs of Knit.1 Magazine, but has her finger on the pulse of the knitting world.  She’ll keep you abreast of what’s haps in yarn and much more!

 Knitty Blog
Friend and sometime partner-in-crime, Amy Singer, is the founder of Knitty.com and the voice of the Knitty Blog.  She writes about her antics traveling around the country promoting Knitty.com and her new blook.  She’s a very talented, very funny lady.  We love her.

Spiders Knit!
The Spiders make their home at The Point on Friday nights.  There’s a whole bunch of them and they all have their own knitting blogs (one of the requirements to become a Spider).  Each one has a unique perspective on knitting, and, well, life itself.

Knit and Tonic
Wendy Bernard is possibly, in our opinion, one of the most glamorous, hysterical, honest, and talented women alive.  She has very chic, wearable, original patterns for sale (and for free) on her blog (as well as, on The Garter Belt).  Read her blog, laugh your butt off and, possibly, knit something fabulous.

Simply

sublime.jpg

We’ve recieved a fresh yarn infusion this week at The Point and it’s called Sublime.  Because it is, sublime.  You see how that works?

The yarn giants at Knitting Fever Inc. (the people who bring us Debbie Bliss and Noro) have introduced a new line of yarn and we, the enthusiastic knitters that we are, jumped in feet first.

The line consists of a superwash extrafine merino wool, a cashmere/merino/silk blend in two differnt weights and a kid mohair that it to die for!  Each yarn is color co-ordinated with the other and they mix and match like heaven.  And the patterns?  Chic, lovely, knittable, wearable - you name it!

We have every yarn in every color and every pattern book they make!  It’s was just so gorgeous that we coulnd’t resist!

Hopefully you won’t either!

The Old Ball Game

April 5th, 2007

ballpark.jpg

This week marked the offical openning of the Major League Baseball season.  What does that mean for us knitters?  The return of Stitch N’ Pitch!!

Quickly growing in popularity in the last two years or so, Stitch N’ Pitch is a special night, sponsored by TNNA, for knitters to band together and (well, what else?) take in a baseball game!

We all know it’s nothing new for knitters to be seen plying their craft in public, but the presence of the TNNA means knitting-related prizes and other knitterly fun!

The really extra special good news?  Stitch N’ Pitch is coming to NYC!  Stitch N’ Pitch Day at Mets’ Stadium is August 8th.  Check out the calendar and get your tickets through your local team.

(Clever TNNA has gathered links to all ticket sales just to make things easy for us.)

Diva Goddess

March 30th, 2007

goddessweb.jpg

As if we didn’t already need an attitude adjustment, the creative geniuses over at Stitch Diva hit us with a double-whammy.  Diva and Goddess.

Meet Goddess, the latest super chic and sexy pattern from Jennifer Hansen, the creative force behind Stitch Diva Studios.  This is just one of four amazing new patterns that are available to you at The Point.  Right now.
We, smarty-pants that we are, have a subscription (yes, like your martha stewart living) to Stitch Diva Studios.  That means, as soon as there is a new pattern available, we get it.  that means you get it.  Ya’ dig?

So, stop denying your inner Diva, Goddess, whatever, and snatch one of these up.  We’re standing by to help you find your way.

Represent

March 21st, 2007

yarn-harlot.jpg

There’s a bit of hoopla buzzing about the knitting world. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or with your head in a bag (ok, so you were legitimately busy!) for the last month or so, you’ve probably heard that The Yarn Harlot has published a new book.

This woman has been known to create quite a stir when she appears in public. It’s really something of a phenomenon and non-knitters don’t really know how to handle it. They’re usually left scratching their head while their normally quiet places of business are taken over by crazy knitters weilding half-knit socks and the like.

Well, Stephanie (The Yarn Harlot), has decided that it’s high time knitters were recognized as the powerful group of consumers that they are. She’s asking all of us to get out in public tomorrow and Represent.

She’s going to speaking at FIT tomorrow, 3/22 at 6pm. FIT is located on the corner of 7th Avenue and West 27th Street. The event is *free* and will be in the Haft Auditorium in Building C.

Along with reading from her new book, she will be talking about the power of knitters in numbers. There will be events and yarn crawls and parties all weekend. Check out this page devoted to the event and celebrate your knitterly-ness by visiting your favorite yarn shop! (Ahem, yes, I mean us!)

While searching for some blog-worthy material to share with our dear readers, we at The Point came upon a very cool website we just had to share with you!

Did you ever wonder, “Is there a website where I can find out all about what is happening in the knitting world all at once? A site that will search thousands of other sites and select the most interesting news and free patterns and post them all in one place?”
