Seen This Morning: Knitting Away Stress
Stores Are Popping Up Throughout The City
 Eyewitness News

(New York - WABC, November 30, 2005) - Knit one, pearl two -- a stitch in time can save the mind.
The age old craft of knitting is becoming the trendiest way to chill out.

And there is a growing number of stores where knitters can indulge their hobby. Like "The Point" -- a knitting cafe in Manhattan's West Village.

Here, knitter wannabees can learn the craft and seasoned hands can buy yarn then put in some serious needle time while enjoying a cup of coffee.

Store owner Helane Blumfield says knitting is shedding its stuffy image -- becoming a multi-generational past time everyone can enjoy.

"Stitch Therapy" in Park Slope, Brooklyn has knitting and crocheting circles. In fact, most knitting stores offer classes in both crafts.

This yarn and needle shop opened over a year ago. Owner Maxcine Degouttes gave up her job in the corporate world and hasn't looked back.

According to the Craft Yarn Council of America, the percentage of knitters and crocheters has doubled over the last ten years to 18 percent.

Besides, its therapeutic value -- bright colors, funky textures, and fun patterns -- are also making stitching more appealing.

And it's not just for women. More men are coming into the "circle" -- finding knitting an unbeatable way to relax.
